Man United fans in full agreement as Andre Onana and Nemanja Matic dispute deepens

Nemanja Matic’s comments about Andre Onana ahead of his Lyon side facing Manchester United have sparked responses aplenty on social media.

The Red Devils host Lyon on Thursday in the first leg of their Europa Legue quarter-final tie, with that competition being Ruben Amorim’s last chance to salvage some silverware in a dreadful first season.

Amorim’s side lie 13th in the Premier League table with seven matches left to play, and they’re all-but certain to miss out on continental football next season unless they can lift the Europa League title.

Losing to Nottingham Forest prior to a goalless draw with Manchester City on Sunday is hardly the best preparation for a European tie, particularly against a Lyon side still in Champions League contention.

Lyon sit fifth in Ligue 1 and are just four points behind second-placed Monaco, but prior to a must-win pair of matches for the Red Devils, United goalkeeper Andre Onana has sparked a bizarre argument.

Nemanja Matic hits back at Andre Onana comments

Onana’s time between the Old Trafford sticks has been a turbulent one, and despite lifting the FA Cup last season, many Man United fans would be happy to see the back of him as transfer speculation looms.

Following a Manchester Derby in which he was given very little to do, Onana said “on paper, United are better than Lyon” as he looked ahead to Thursday’s match, and that comment hasn’t gone down well.

Matic didn’t lift a single piece of silverware across his five years at Old Trafford, but that didn’t stop him from taking direct aim at Onana when he responded in a pre-match press conference on 9 April.

As shared by Sky Sports News on X, Matic said: “To say that you, need to have cover – Onana?

“I respect everyone, but if you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you need to take care what you’re talking about.

“If David de Gea, or Peter Schmeichel or Van der Sar said that, then I will question myself, but when you are one of the statistically worst goalkeepers in Man United’s modern history? He needs to show that before he says [such things].”

Manchester United fans join in on Andre Onana pile-on

United’s former chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider back in February that staff are increasingly concerned at Onana’s performance levels this season, and those fears are reflected in the fanbase.

While Matic hardly pulled up any trees during his five-year spell at Old Trafford, many fans ageed with his comments; saying the Serbian was “absolutely right” about Onana being a “terrible keeper”.

The Cameroonian’s “dreadful mistakes” in his two seasons in red were also highlighted in support of the verdict, and while some fans argued the dig was unneccessary, another said that Matic “spoke facts”.
