Medical expert lambasts Man United fans after ‘ridiculous’ Edinson Cavani accusations

Edinson Cavani takes his recovery from injury very seriously – some of the criticism recently aimed at him by Man United fans is “ridiculous”.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Cavani, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is currently sidelined with a groin strain and has also complained of a stomach bug.

But the Uruguayan was spotted at the boxing match between Amir Khan and Kell Brook last Friday (18 February), per the Manchester Evening News.

He was not fit to play in the 4-2 win over Leeds United the following day, nor did he travel to Spain to face Atletico Madrid last night (23 Ferbruary).

But Dinnery slammed the United fans who have accused the 35-year-old of being reluctant to return to action.

“The reaction I’ve seen has really surprised me,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“There have been people hitting out at Cavani for going out or because he isn’t ready to play again as soon as they’d like. It’s ridiculous.

“Footballers are just human beings. Cavani has had an unbelievable career and is very careful with his lifestyle.

“He is still in pristine condition and doesn’t take any shortcuts. Football is his life.

“Things haven’t gone as smoothly as he’d like since he joined United. But he isn’t a guy who regularly goes out and hits the town.

“Decisions won’t have been taken in isolation. He will have spoken to Rangnick and they would have made a decision about the Leeds game.

“There’s no harm in him going out if he’s doing his work in Carrington. He’ll have been in first thing on Sunday morning doing his rehab.”

Cavani has netted twice and provided one assist this term.

It is not clear whether he will be available to face Watford on Saturday (26 February).
