Man United given update on signing Wolves star who’s ideal for Ruben Amorim’s system

Man United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as they are set to place a significant price tag on his departure.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 24-year-old signed a new deal in April which will enable Wolves to set a high asking price for their prized asset which could deter Ruben Amorim‘s side from making a move in the mid-season window.

Gomes signed a new contract at Wolves in April to extend his stay until 2030 and deter growing interest after his impressive displays last season.

That came as Football Insider exclusively revealed in January that Liverpool and Man United have been tracking Gomes, and that interest is now set to be reignited.

Wolves remain reluctant to lose the Brazil international, and are hoping to keep hold of him despite suggestions he could look to leave if they are relegated.

Man United could miss out on Joao Gomes deal

Wolves are sat rock bottom of the table as things stand, and are without a win in 11 games, while they have been cut eight points adrift of safety.

That has set the likes of Man United on alert in case their players become available, but Wolves still hold the power in negotiations due to the length of Gomes’ contract.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “There’s a long list of midfielder that Man United are being linked with, and Joao Gomes is the latest name to be added to that list.

“Again, Premier League proven as well, which is a key thing for Man United in their transfer policy right now.

“The problem for Man United probably is that he signed a new contract not too long ago as well to keep him at Wolves until 2030.

“So Wolves will be demanding a decent fee for the Brazilian if they were to sell him.

“He’s an energetic midfielder with Premier League experience and can play in a double pivot midfield which Ruben Amorim likes as well.

“He’s a player United are well aware of and they’ll keep tabs on the situation.

“As I said, if Wolves do suffer relegation from the Premier League, it could make a deal easier to do due to price tag and obviously the player looking to play at the highest level possible.”

Gomes sent a message to Wolves fans following the discontent after losing to Burnley at Molineux, and has maintained a strong relationship, but could be tempted to leave.

Wolves could be forced to accept Gomes offer

Football Insider revealed on 14 November that Wolves could be forced to accept offers for Gomes if they suffer relegation from the Premier League.

Wolves are sat rock bottom of the table as things stand, and are without a win in 11 games, while they have been cut eight points adrift of safety.

Despite their decision to sack Vitor Pereira and hire Rob Edwards, a number of clubs have been placed on alert in case they are forced into major sales next summer.

Mick Brown told Football Insider on 30 October that Wolves are concerned about losing star players if they are relegated amid growing interest from rival clubs.

Now, there is a growing feeling that they will be forced to accept offers, with the likes of Gomes keen to remain playing at the highest level if the club go down.
