Man United given warning about Elliott Anderson signing – ‘it would break the golden rule’

Manchester United have been given a warning about their potential signing of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliott Anderson.

Man United have been linked with Anderson as they continue to search for a solution to their central midfield issues.

The former Newcastle United man impressed on his England debut against Andorra over the international break, and played the full 90 minutes against Serbia three days later.

However, Football Insider revealed on 12 September that Ange Postecoglou does not want to lose Anderson, and Forest are unlikely to entertain offers even though the player will soon be worth £70million.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Man United will struggle to convince Marinakis to sell the 22-year-old.

Anderson is a ‘high-quality’ player

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Man United need to be wary of signing Anderson based off his Under-21 European Championships form, as it is the golden rule to never buy players because of their performances in an international tournament.

The Forest midfielder was named in the team of the tournament, with England beating Germany in the final to lift the trophy.

Despite his reservations, Wyness added that Anderson does look to be a very high-quality player.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, they’ve got to get past Marinakis if they want Anderson, as we saw with Gibbs White and how that all happened.

“I think there’ll be a lot of interest in Elliott. Of course, the golden rule is never buy a player after a tournament or an international tournament just because they perform well. But I think here’s a case where he is a very high-quality player.

“I’ve seen a lot of comparisons with the Gascoignes and those sorts of things as well. I think he is a great player to watch. I enjoy watching him. I think he’s a talent, and I think there will be interest in him.

“But as I say, they’ve got that bulldog of Marinakis biting the opposition. And we’ve seen his bark can work with Morgan Gibbs White’s situation. So let’s see. But I think there will be interest, definitely. He’s a quality player.”

Man United defender could quit

Meanwhile, Harry Maguire could reportedly quit Man United at the end of the season after entering the final year of his current contract.

That is according to their former chief scout, Mick Brown, who claims that Amorim is pushing the 32-year-old out with his tactics.

Man United dismissed enquiries about Maguire during the summer transfer window as he remained a key part of the manager’s plans for the season.

However, he has yet to start a Premier League game this season despite coming off the bench three times in an attempt for Amorim to turn results around.
