Man United have pulled off ‘incredible’ Bruno Fernandes deal after journalist’s update – pundit
Man United have pulled off an “incredible” piece of business with Bruno Fernandes’ imminent contract extension, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Red Devils have done well to convince him to stay despite their Champions League hopes slipping away.
According to Fabrizio Romano (26 March), Fernandes, 27, is set to sign a five-year contract in the coming days.
The Portugal international has notched 49 goals and 39 assists in 117 games since joining the Old Trafford club in January 2020.
The former Sporting star’s current contract is set to expire in June 2025.
When asked if Fernandes’ imminent extension is a coup for Man United, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Yeah, that’s a really important bit of business.
“He’s been a huge player for them since he’s come in, and his goal and assist record has proved that as well.
“He’s such a talented player, and they really need him in that side. Man United need that creativity and that goal threat from midfield.
“No, it hasn’t been the best season for him – but it’s been a very poor season from everyone at Old Trafford.
“To get him tied down, knowing they probably won’t be in the Champions League next season – that’s incredible.”
Fernandes cost Man United a reported initial fee of £46.6million, which could rise to £68million with potential add-ons.

The midfielder has registered nine goals and 14 assists this season.
The Red Devils sit sixth in the Premier League.
