Man United miss out on huge windfall after ‘awful’ blow – Kieran Maguire
Man United have missed out on up to £3million in prize money after losing in the Europa League final – and they have also taken a multi-million pound hit from sponsors.
That is according to finance guru and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after United’s penalty shootout loss to Villareal on Wednesday night.
The result means United have finished the season trophiless for a fourth successive campaign.
Maguire explained that the club has missed out on both prize money and financial incentives from commercial partners after the defeat.
He also detailed how United have missed out on a potentially lucrative Uefa Super Cup clash with Man City.
“The difference is £2m or £3m at most,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.
“So that in itself is not particularly significant. But remember that they’ve also missed out on qualifying for the Super Cup.
“If that had been Man United against Man City, there would have been a lot of interest in that. So it’s the money they’ve missed out on there that will hit them.
“They were awful in the final and it’s a lost opportunity.
“There are also performance bonuses built into all of United’s commercial arrangements. They’ve lost out on that too.
“If you think about it from their sponsors’ perspective, they want to show their product next to a big shiny trophy.”
As per their last set of accounts, United’s revenue dropped by 7.2 per cent to £281.8m over the last financial year.
They finished 2nd in the Premier League in 2020-21.
