Kieran Maguire: Man United ‘jumped before they were pushed’ as ‘mega-money’ deal aborted

Man United likely “jumped before they were pushed” in beginning the process of withdrawing from their relationship with TeamViewer.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest developments behind the scenes at the Old Trafford commercial department.

As relayed by Sports Business last Friday (16 December), United have agreed a new option to allow them to buy back the remainder of the front-of-shirt sponsorship rights from TeamViewer.

The deal between the two parties was worth a reported £235million over the course of a five-year contract.

The agreement has been framed as beneficial for both United and TeamViewer.

But United likely aborted the deal before TeamViewer had the chance to exit the agreement on their terms, claims Maguire.

“This is an interesting development,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“Sometimes it’s better to jump before you’re pushed. United could see where the wind was blowing.

Some of TeamViewers shareholders are unhappy with the mega-money cost of the relationship. They don’t see the benefits of sponsoring one of the world’s biggest football brands.

“Noises have been made about that. If the relationship is starting to sour, if you’re the one to cut the cord, that can put you in a stronger position.

United in a post-Covid environment are able to attract a bigger sponsor. That deal was to a certain extent seen as a transition given the circumstances we were in when the original deal was signed.
