Man United make decision on triggering £21.4m Sofyan Amrabat clause – sources

Man United have decided against keeping on-loan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat at the club permanently, sources have told Football Insider.

The 27-year-old joined the Old Trafford club temporarily from Fiorentina last summer (2023).

United have an option-to-buy clause in that deal but it is believed they have no plans to activate it in the off-season.

Sky Sports reported last September (2023) that Man United paid an £8.5million loan fee for the midfielder – and can make the transfer permanent for £21.4million.

But club chiefs have concluded that the Morocco international is not suited to Premier League football and will not be part of the rebuild under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.

Amrabat has made 23 appearances across all competitions for Erik ten Hag’s side so far this season.

However, he has managed just 13 starts in those outings and has not been named in the starting lineup since the FA Cup defeat of Nottingham Forest in February.

The Netherlands-born ace has primarily played in his natural defensive midfield berth but also as a left-back.

Amrabat impressed for Morocco during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, putting him on the radar of top clubs around Europe.

He got his move to the Premier League but has failed to make a real impression for United and is set to return to Fiorentina this summer.

The 27-year-old has struggled for regular game time in Ten Hag’s side after the emergence of teenager Kobbie Mainoo.

Amrabat has now racked up 281 career club appearances, playing for Utrecht, Hellas Verona, Feyenoord and Club Brugge – as well as parent club Fiorentina.
