Man United may be set to sign ‘next Donny van de Beek’ as Erik ten Hag pushes for deal – pundit
Frenkie de Jong could turn out to be a Man United flop like Donny van de Beek if he moves to Old Trafford this summer, according to Danny Mills.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Man City and England defender also suggested De Jong may be behind Van De Beek in the Man United pecking order if sings from Barcelona.
Fabrizio Romano reported this week (12 May) United have been in contact with the 25-year-old’s camp and Erik ten Hag is pushing for him.
The pair worked together at Ajax, along with Van De Beek, before De Jong moved to Barcelona in January 2019 for an initial £65million fee while Van De Beek moved to Old Trafford 18 months later.
“It’s never easy stepping into the Premier League, no matter how good you are,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“Especially if you’re coming from a few years at Barcelona after being in the Dutch league.
“You look at Haaland but he’s different. He’s a physical specimen, sensational. He’s going to have no issue whatsoever dealing with the pace and power of the game.
“At Man United, you’ve got some players coming back. I would expect they want Donny van de Beek back because there are links there.

“Man United will have options. All managers like to go back to a player they know and have worked with.
“In an important area like midfield, you want consistency and reliability. If that means going to get a player you’ve worked with previously, we’ve seen it time and time again, it’s often the best way.”
