Man United may have to walk away from Frenkie de Jong deal after journalist’s update – pundit

Paul Robinson has told Man United to forget signing Frenkie de Jong if the midfielder is willing to take a pay cut to stay at Barcelona.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Spurs and England goalkeeper urged the Red Devils to instead turn their attentions to signing Youri Tielemans from Leicester City.

Man United have been in advanced talks over a deal for De Jong for a number of weeks but have so far failed to complete the move.

According to Spanish publication AS (24 July), Barca manager Xavi has asked the Netherlands international to lower his salary by almost half to stay at the Nou Camp.

However, Fabrizio Romano told The United Stand (25 July), that De Jong has no intentions of accepting a pay cut to stay with the Catalan giants.

When asked by Football Insider if United should abandon a deal for De Jong if he is showing signs of wanting to remain at Barcelona, Robinson said: “If the rumours are true, Manchester United should walk away from it.

“I think he has come out and said that he is not keen on leaving Barcelona.

“United keep knocking and knocking. If it is true that he will take a pay cut, United have to turn their attentions elsewhere. They are wasting their time otherwise.

“I think they need to try and get a deal for Tielemans over the line.”

In other news, a pundit has claimed this may be the real reason Christian Eriksen chose Man United after journalist’s reveal.
