Revealed: Man United miss out on £87m-a-year jackpot

Man United are missing out on £87million per year in additional revenue, data seen by Football Insider shows.

Digital membership schemes (£35m), streaming services (£19m), and virtual matchday experiences (£33m) have been identified as three sectors from which the Red Devils can unlock extra turnover.

Commercial experts have also zeroed in on the US market as a key growth area, arguing that 12 major clubs – including United – could generate an extra £320m annually from sports fans across the pond.

Those are the findings of CLV Group‘s Fan Relationship Index, which examines how clubs can maximise revenues globally by using data and insights on their fanbases.

It is argued that the likes of United can apply the same tools and expertise which they use to monitor players to supercharge their commercial income.

Twelve major clubs – United, AC Milan, Arsenal, Barcelona, Corinthians, Flamengo, Inter Milan, Juventus, Man City, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Tottenham – could supposedly earn an extra £750m annually following this approach.

The average annual spend per fan across these clubs is between £127 and £171, with supporters from Brazil currently spending the most.

Data shows that clubs can hone in on the strategies of mature NFL and NBA outfits to deliver revenue-per-fan figures 10 times higher than they currently achieve.

United’s commercial department routinely claims that the club has 1.1billion followers worldwide.

Their turnover in 2021-22 stood at £583.2m, meaning their average take per follower – a loosely defined term – was just 53p.
