Man United news: Campbell issues three-word verdict as Jadon Sancho controversy analysed

Kevin Campbell has claimed referee Craig Pawson was right not to award Man United a penalty after the ball struck Arsenal defender Cedric Soares on the arm.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gunners and Everton striker claimed the incident was “out of” the 30-year-old’s control at the Emirates.

As shown on the BBC’s Match of the Day (23 April), Jadon Sancho thought he’d won Man United a penalty when he kicked the ball off Cedric’s arm.

However, referee Craig Pawson did not point to the spot and VAR official Jarred Gillet opted not to intervene.

The decision would ultimately impact the game with Arsenal eventual 3-1 winners over Ralf Rangnick’s side.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if United were denied a clear penalty, Campbell issued a three-word verdict: “Not at all.

“The one thing I will say is that if you’re falling to the ground how can you get your arm out of the way? What are you supposed to do? The ball rolled into his arm. It was out of his control.

“I understand why people say it should have been a penalty. If it had been given I see the reasoning because it hit his arm. There is no way he could have avoided the contact thought because he was falling. It’s like if you go for a slide tackle.

“If it was given, nobody would complain. But in this case, some common sense was used. I like that because normally we don’t see it. The penalty wasn’t given and I think that was the right decision.”
