Man United news: Ex-Fifa official claims different ref would have let disallowed goal stand
A different referee may have allowed Josh Brownhill’s own goal to stand during Burnley’s clash with Man United.
That’s according to ex-FIFA and Premier League referee Keith Hackett, speaking exclusively to Football Insider
Paul Pogba was penalised for his challenge on Erik Pieters in the build-up to the disallowed goal during the first half of Tuesday’s (8 February) clash.
After the game, Ralf Rangnick told BT Sport the decision was “very soft” and criticised the linesman after he took several seconds to wave his flag for a foul after the ball crossed the line.
Hackett insists Rangnick has a case and claims another referee may have allowed the goal.
“Yeah, I can see why it was given and I think the referee got it right,” Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“Had it not been given, I don’t think anyone would have complained.
“You have to look at the balance but the application of the law was absolutely correct.
“When goals are ruled out in the game of football, you have to be 100% certain.
“It’s the same with sending a player off. You can’t second guess that.
“The referee got it right but next week another ref might take a different view on it.
“I understand why the manager is annoyed and maybe he has a case for that reason.”

Man United lost ground in the top four race thanks to their draw.
They are next in action against Southampton on Saturday (11 February).
