Man United news: Ex-PL CEO’s verdict on surprise ‘transfer ban’
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted it would be “unworkable” for Newcastle United to ban Man United and Dan Ashworth from signing any of their players.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed agents would side-step the agreement and “agitate” for a move to Old Trafford.
According to a report from i News in March, Newcastle and Man United are yet to agree on an effective ‘transfer ban’ – which would see Ashworth barred from signing any Magpies stars for a set period.
The transfer guru was placed on gardening leave at St James’ Park in February after agreeing to join United.
Football Insider revealed on 1 May that Newcastle will only fast-track Ashworth’s move to Man United once they have secured a replacement.

It has been widely reported that the Magpies are demanding around £20million in compensation.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’ve been in situations where agreements like that have been discussed.
“Clubs take a manager and you try and implement a transfer ban to make it so they can’t come back and raid the squad for a certain amount of time.
“But in the end, it’s unworkable, it’s disastrous. Agents will work behind the scenes to agitate for moves.
“Really, it’s not the way to go about it.
“Ashworth should be in place at Man United. He’s got a lot of hard work ahead of him in this summer window.
“If you can’t meet the compensation value, then something isn’t quite right in this whole decision-making process.”
