Man United news: Expert cites Virgil van Dijk amid ‘massive’ transfer claim
New Man United boss Erik ten Hag must fix the “horrible” recruitment at Old Trafford in order to succeed, according to Frank McAvennie.
The former West Ham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the transfer incomings over the past few years have been “not good enough” – and contrasted the captures of Harry Maguire and Virgil van Dijk.
Man United confirmed the appointment of Ajax boss Ten Hag on Thursday (21 April), with the Dutchman set to arrive at the end of the season.
According to The Mirror (20 April), Ten Hag will be given £200million to revamp his squad in the next window.
McAvennie accused the current Red Devils stars of “strolling” during games – and questioned their commitment to the cause under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
He told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild: “Ten Hag has done well at Ajax – but can he walk in there and change that dressing room?
“I’m looking at boys like McTominay who put their foot in for Scotland – he’s not doing it for United.
“None of them are tackling, none of them are harassing, none of them are chasing. They’re just strolling.
“Whoever has been in charge of recruitment has got it horribly wrong. The players who have come in are not good enough.
“There’s a lot of players who aren’t good enough.
“Look at Harry Maguire, the difference between someone like him and Virgil van Dijk is night and day – it’s massive.”

Maguire, who cost a reported £80million in 2019, has been widely panned for his performances this term.
Van Dijk cost Liverpool £75million in 2018 and has won the Premier League and Champions League during his time at the club.
