Man United news: Pundit calls for major change as controversial Raphael Varane footage emerges

Alan Hutton has suggested giving officials mics would help fans after Newcastle United were not awarded a penalty against Man United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender cited how well the use of technology works in rugby but is uncertain how it could work in football stadiums.

As shown on the BBC’s Match of the Day 2 (16 October), Raphael Varane made contact with Newcastle’s Callum Wilson in the penalty area.

Referee Craig Pawson waved away the protests from the players and fans.

It was not the only incident over the 90 minutes with Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal controversially ruled out by Pawson in the second half.

The game finished 0-0.

Hutton suggested it would be helpful to fans to hear the officials’ communication over potential incidents.

I do think it would help,” he told Football Insider.

I do not think it will happen but I do think it would help. You look at rugby for instance and how well it works there.

Man United fans are growing tired

You listen to what the referee has got to say, you can hear what they are saying between the VAR room. How is that going to work within a stadium I am not so sure.

But I think it is a good idea. You can see exactly what they are thinking. Whether you agree with it or not it is a good insight into what is happening. Do I think it will happen? Probably not.
