Man United news: Pundit issues ’embarrassing’ claim after Kevin De Bruyne confession

Manchester United were “embarrassing” in Sunday’s defeat to Manchester City, according to Alan Hutton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland international ripped into Ralf Rangnick’s men for failing to give “110 per cent” against their rivals.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of Sunday’s game (6 February), Roy Keane slammed the “shameful” performance and suggested some United players “gave up”.

As quoted by ESPN on Monday (7 February), Kevin De Bruyne, who scored twice in City’s 4-1 win, admitted it seemed as though Man United players “gave up a little” in the latter stages.

However, he claimed Ralf Rangnick’s squad lacked the stamina, rather than desire, to keep up a high-tempo pressing game.

Hutton admitted the Belgium midfielder’s quotes would be a bitter pill for the Manchester United squad to swallow.

Reacting to De Bruyne’s comments, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s a difficult one to take. It is a worry.

It would be a worry in a normal league game. To go up against your biggest rivals and for you to go down that route where you’re being questioned for your running ability and aggression, it’s not good for a footballer.

“It’s not a good look. You expect to be giving your all in every game but just a little bit more in this Man City game. It was really poor from them.

You just have to listen to the likes of Roy Keane after and the way he spoke about it. That tells you everything.

“I know they’re missing players and they’ve had an up and down season, but you expect 110 per cent. We didn’t see that. I mean the possession stats were embarrassing.

“They are definitely in a transition period. It’s one of those situations where I don’t really know where they’re going.

“They have a lot of individual players in there that don’t play as a team. It’s a real worry.”
