Man United news: Pundit slams Victor Lindelof and big-name teammate after latest

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof do not have the skill or passion required to play for Man United, according to Frank McAvennie.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker, 62, claimed he could still perform well against the pair given the chance.

Maguire and Lindelof started the humiliating 4-1 defeat to Man City last weekend (6 March).

As well as handing bragging rights to the blue side of Manchester the defeat was also a major blow to United’s hopes of finishing in the top-four.

They are currently fifth in the Premier League and host top-four rivals Tottenham tomorrow (12 March).

Lindelof told club media today (11 March) that if the side can find some consistency they should finish in the Champions League places.

But McAvennie has suggested they will struggle to find that with the Sweden international and Maguire starting at the heart of the defence.

“You look at some of the combinations at the back,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Maguire and Lindelof? Do me a favour, I’m 62 and I could play against them.

“They are not good players. When you look at the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Jaap Stam and Nemanja Vidic.

“Even the ones I played against, Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister, put their foot in where it hurt and put their head where they would put their feet to fight for Man United’s cause.

“Steve Bruce and Pallister weren’t exceptional players but they knew how to defend.”

Man United

Man United have conceded 38 Premier League goals this season – Southampton (43) are the only team in the top half to ship more.

Ralf Rangnick’s side are a point behind Arsenal in fourth but have played three games more.

In other news, Man United are going ‘all out’ to land a manager who is ‘by far the best candidate’.
