Under-the-radar Man United talks have been ‘taking place for months’ – Kieran Maguire

Talks over the ownership structure at Man United have been taking place for months – but they seem to have gone under the radar.

That is according to finance expert and Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively after Joel Glazer appeared at a United fans forum on 4th June.

Quoted by the Guardian, Glazer revealed the club is working on “a new class of shares which will each carry the same voting rights as the shares owned by the Glazer family.”

This equity will be available to purchase for fans.

The Glazer family currently hold the club’s A-shares which give them greater voting rights than those who buy a stake on the stock market.

Maguire claimed that United have long been engaged in discussion with the Manchester United Supporters Trust over reforming this system.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “Well, I think the ethos of the Glazers is that they want the fanbase to be, and I quote, the ‘seventh Glazer’ on the board.

“They have had discussions with MUST for a number of months, which I think has gone under the radar.

“If these shares are issued and carry 10 votes each and sufficient numbers are issued, it could give fans greater representation.

“They have also committed to attend these meetings and said a member of the Glazer family will be present.

“So does it give fans power in the club? No. Does it give them influence? I think that’s probably a more appropriate word to use.

“It’s a bit like when I have a discussion with my wife about where we’re going to go on holiday this year. We look at all the places, we both make suggestions, and in the end, we agree that she’s right.”
