Man United player ratings v Chelsea – 9/10 Garnacho dazzles as 3/10 stinker loses ball 11 times
Man United snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in their 4-3 loss against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday (4 April).
The Red Devils bounced back from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 through a brace from Alejandro Garnacho and a goal from Bruno Fernandes, before the game turned on its head once again late on.
Diogo Dalot’s foul on Noni Madueke allowed hattrick hero Cole Palmer to level from the spot in added time before Palmer grabbed all three points for Chelsea with a deflected 101st-minute effort.
Ten Hag made three changes after the 1-1 draw against Brentford on Saturday (31 March), bringing Antony, Casemiro and Harry Maguire into the side.
The defeat leaves Man United sixth in the table and some 11 points adrift of the Premier League’s top four.
3/10 Dalot costs Man United – but 9/10 Garnacho is the club’s new hope
Football Insider has analysed the Red Devils’ performances against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
PLAYER RATINGS
Andre Onana [6]
Should have done better for the first goal but made some six saves (five from shots inside the box) amid some seriously poor defending from his rearguard. His pass led to Bruno Fernandes’ first-half equaliser.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka [6]
Was characteristically good in defence, winning eight of his 11 duels and making three tackles. Also provided ample support for Antony in attack upon his return to a right-sided role.
Harry Maguire [6]
Not much he could have done individually about the four goals, but the ex-skipper did not provide a calming presence for his defence in tough moments. The England star won just one of his three duels and will be disappointed with his performance.
Raphael Varane [6]
Decent enough display but could be a spent force in top-level European football after limping off yet again at half-time. The Frenchman, who made three defensive actions, is out of contract in June.
Diogo Dalot [3]

Shocking. Was exposed time and time again in a left-back role by Chelsea’s tricky attack and conceded a ridiculous added-time penalty to give Palmer the chance to level. He lost possession 11 times and committed five fouls.
Casemiro [4]
Marginally better than Dalot in that he didn’t contribute to Man United’s downfall as dramatically, but was nonetheless exposed in a thrilling, end-to-end contest. Looked visibly off the pace as he enters his twilight years, winning just one of his five ground duels.
Kobbie Mainoo [5]
Mainoo was industrious and energetic but his youthfulness showed on occasions as the game became more and more stretched. Completed just 70% of his 30 passes – the worst of any Man United starter.

Bruno Fernandes [7]
Was one of several bright sparks going forward for United, scoring a brilliant equalising header in the first half. He made three key passes in addition to the goal.
Antony [7]
Had one of his brightest games in a Man United shirt to date. Redeemed the penalty he clumsily gave away in the first half with a brilliant assist for Garnacho’s second goal. The Brazillian was successful with six of his seven dribbles on the night.
Alejandro Garnacho [9]
Was making his 28th consecutive start for the club and cemented his status as Man United’s new hope with a brilliant brace. Dragged Ten Hag’s side back into the game with his first goal by latching on to Moises Caicedo’s shocking mistake.

Rasmus Hojlund [5]
Cleverly left the ball for Fernandes’ equaliser but was anonymous in the key areas despite an industrious performance. He won just one of his six duels and managed just one shot – which was blocked.
SUBSTITUTES
Jonny Evans [N/A]
Was on the pitch for just 20 minutes before being replaced by Willy Kambwala due to injury.
Willy Kambwala [N/A]
Made no major errors but was part of the defensive group which failed to recognise Palmer’s threat for his late winner.
Marcus Rashford [N/A]
Came on for Hojlund but like the Dane, Rashford failed to make a tangible impact on the game.

Scott McTominay [N/A]
Replaced Casemiro with 15 minutes of normal time left to play and will be wondering if he has a case to start after the Brazillian’s shocker.
Mason Mount [N/A]
Came on late to a chorus of boos and kept the ball well away from United’s goal with some tidy footwork. He could be another player gearing up to take a starting role in Ten Hag’s side.
