Man United ready to accept ‘enormous’ offer after Bruno Fernandes bombshell

Bruno Fernandes has been linked with a Manchester United exit following interest from Saudi Pro League clubs.

Fernandes has already gone public about his situation after revealing Man United wanted to sell him in the summer transfer window to Saudi club Al-Hilal.

It was speculated Al-Hilal were ready to pay £100million to sign Fernandes, but he remained at Old Trafford despite being presented with a favourable package.

The 31-year-old’s situation is currently complicated by the injury he picked up in Man United’s 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa on 21 December, with the January transfer window just days away.

Man United talks revealed after Bruno Fernandes exit latest

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Old Trafford chiefs were ready to accept an “enormous” offer to sell Fernandes over the summer.

Football Insider revealed on Sunday (28 December) Man United are increasingly likely to sell Fernandes in January despite his injury.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “Well, it looks like from a financial side they’ve had that conversation and decided that they would have been happy to let him go last summer.

“You can understand why when the fee would have been enormous for a player his age. I think the people currently leading the decisions approach it from a kind of financial and private equity perspective.

“You say, ‘Well, here’s an asset that’s clearly closer to the end of its useful life as an asset for the club and, therefore, we should look to try and maximise the amount of money that we can receive for that player’.”

Man United signed Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 in a deal worth up to £67.7m, meaning the club could make a significant profit on a potential sale.

Ruben Amorim makes Fernandes transfer decision

Borson suggested Fernandes either didn’t want to move to Saudi or Ruben Amorim made it clear he wanted to keep hold of his captain.

“They had an offer clearly or they felt that they could get an offer out of Saudi Arabia and, therefore, would have been happy to take it,” said Borson.

“The player either didn’t want to go or the manager I don’t think wanted to sell.”

Fernandes, whose contract expires in June 2027, has registered five goals and seven assists in 18 appearances this season.
