Man United set sights on cheaper January alternative to Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton, he plays in Premier League

Manchester United are eyeing a move for Wolves’ Joao Gomes ahead of the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

It’s no secret that Man United are in the market for a central midfielder after missing out on a number of targets over the summer.

Ruben Amorim’s side have been linked with the likes of Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton in recent months.

However, sources say that they are now considering Gomes as a cheaper alternative as they look to finally get a midfielder deal over the line in January.

Joao Gomes deal won’t be easy for Man United

Despite being significantly cheaper than other midfield targets, Gomes will still be an incredibly difficult signing for Man United to pull off when the window reopens.

January is a notoriously difficult time to make big moves in the market, with clubs unwilling to part with their best players, as there is no guarantee of replacing them.

Wolves currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League, and are already nine points adrift of safety with just 12 games played.

The Old Gold will be looking to improve their squad in the January transfer window rather than weaken it, and will do everything in their power to hold onto Gomes.

However, if the Brazilian midfielder decides he wants to make the switch to Man United, then he may be able to force through the move.

Man United make decision on selling midfield star

Despite looking to sign a new midfielder, Man United reportedly have no plans to sell Bruno Fernandes as things stand.

That is according to former Man United chief scout Mick Brown, who claims that Fernandes remains an important part of Amorim‘s plans.

While United will be prepared to assess any “huge” offers that arrive for their captain, they currently have no plans to let him leave.

Fernandes already has five goal contributions for the Red Devils in the Premier League this season, despite playing a deeper role.

The Portuguese international has been utilised alongside Casemiro in a midfield two, but has still popped up with key goals and assists.
