Medical expert: Edinson Cavani may have ‘psychological’ issue at Man United

Man United superstar Edinson Cavani may be struggling “psychologically” in his recovery from injury.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Cavani is struggling with groin and ankle issues but returned to full training last week after a month-long absence.

The Uruguayan, however, did not feel fit enough for last Sunday’s (6 March) Manchester derby.

Interim United boss Ralf Rangnick told club media after the 4-1 defeat at the Etihad: “I cannot force a player to play.”

It is unclear whether he will make himself available for tomorrow’s (12 March) crucial clash against Tottenham.

Dinnery argues that Cavani knows his body better than anyone and may have to overcome a mental barrier before he feels ready to return.

“He is a player who has played at the highest level and is a model professional,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“He is meticulous in his preparation and fitness. Nobody knows his body better than himself.

“The psychological impact can’t be understated. Backroom staff can say that a player is surpassing the baseline metrics and they are ready to go.

“But some players, if they don’t feel 100 per cent psychologically, will be held back.

“Statistics and metrics are are great for gleaning insight, but there is always context around those too. You need to consider those.

“The fact Ronaldo was absent and it was a Manchester derby, that made it a more headline-grabbing situation.

“My understanding is that he has trained fairly well. That’s a good indication that he could be on the cusp of a return.”

Cavani has netted just twice in 15 appearances this season.

He is out of contract in the summer.
