Expert: Man United star Luke Shaw ‘worried’ as ‘major’ announcement looms

The upcoming England squad announcement will be a “major” clue as to the injury status of Man United star Luke Shaw.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

Shaw, 27, has not featured since United’s second match of the season, and his absence has until recently not been addressed by Erik ten Hag.

As quoted by the Manchester Evening News last Sunday (11 September), the new manager said only that the left-back has a “small complaint”.

The same outlet reported that Shaw has picked up a foot injury.

It remains to be seen if the 21-time international is in the running to feature for Gareth Southgate’s side ahead of their double-header against Italy and Germany later this month.

Dinnery claims that the squad announcement will give a strong indication as to the severity of his foot problem.

“From United’s perspective, given recent results and the emergence of Tyrell Malacia, they might not be too worried,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

But from Shaw’s perspective, I’m sure he will be more worried.

“If it’s just a knock, it’s a contact sport and you are always going to have these sorts of injuries.

“We don’t know the specific mechanism in terms of how it happened. That would give us a better indication of the grand scheme of things.

“If it was an issue with regards to load, that might be more of a concern. But if it’s just a knock, I wouldn’t be too concerned.

“I think it will be a major indicator to see if he is called up to that England squad.”
