Medical expert: Edinson Cavani may have played last Man United game after ‘concerning’ news

It is possible that Edinson Cavani has played his last game for Man United after suffering yet another injury.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Cavani, 35, returned to action in the penultimate game before the international break following a month out with a groin strain.

But the centre-forward was forced off after just half an hour in Uruguay’s final World Cup qualifier against Chile last Wednesday (30 March).

As quoted by club media last Friday (1 April), interim United boss Ralf Rangnick revealed that he will be out for up to five weeks with a calf injury.

Cavani is out of contract at the end of the season and per The Sun on 26 March, wants to leave for Real Sociedad on a free transfer ahead of 2022-23.

And Dinnery predicts that the veteran may have already worn a United shirt for the last time.

“It’s possible he might not play again for United,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“This season he just hasn’t been able to maintain that level of fitness. He always seems to be working his way back from something.

“He had that tendon problem at the back end of last year and then another muscular injury in January, a groin problem.

“Then there were personal issues in February that impacted on his training.

“We know he is meticulous and he looks after himself, but this latest setback is a concern.

“It might even just come down to where United are. You can’t totally rule out a return to the squad.

“But if United are winning and playing well, that will impact on his minutes. Even if he comes back in, say, three weeks, he isn’t going to be sharp.

“The flip side is that, if they aren’t playing well, Cavani could be that last roll of the dice.”

Cavani’s 17 appearances this season have yielded just two goals and one assist.

The Red Devils are 7th in the Premier League, three points outside the Champions League places.
