Man United tipped to axe defender after Harry Maguire update before Man City – pundit

Kevin Campbell has tipped Harry Maguire to return to the Man United starting XI for the trip to Manchester City on Sunday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said it would be “a big statement” if the 28-year-old was named on the bench for the second game running.

Maguire was axed from the starting XI last Saturday as the Red Devils shared a goalless draw with Watford at Old Trafford.

The centre-half has come under intense scrutiny for his performances this season, with even his captaincy coming into question.

According to The Times (3 March), some of Maguire’s teammates are privately baffled by his recent inclusion in the team.

However, Campbell suggested Victor Lindelof or Raphael Varane would be dropped at the Etihad.

“I’d expect him to come back in for this one,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“I think Ralf Rangnick was just shaking it up a little bit. I can see Harry Maguire coming back for the City game even though they kept a clean sheet against Watford. It’ll probably be the same team with Maguire as the only change.

“It will be interesting to see what happens though. Maguire is the captain of the club. If he get’s dropped in this game then there may be problems.

“I know he has not been at his best but it would be a big statement if he misses out.”

Maguire has made 28 appearances across all competitions this season.
