Kieran Maguire warns Man United ‘be careful’ as transfer U-turn on the cards

There is no need for Man United to alter their policy of not making major signings in the January transfer window.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Red Devils’ approach to recruitment.

Per the Daily Mail last Saturday (11 February), new United CEO Richard Arnold will review the Red Devils’ long-term transfer strategy.

It is understood that there is a feeling within the club that this season’s January window was botched.

Jesse Lingard was denied a loan move away from Old Trafford, which in turn led to a public spat with under-pressure interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

And Arnold is claimed to be considering revising the club’s tendency not to make waves in the mid-season window in response.

But Maguire insists that January signings tend to represent bad value.

“You tend to get worse value for money in January,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“The advantage of focusing on summer signings is that you aren’t signing players who are cup-tied for the Champions League.

“If you are going to spend big and that player can’t play in the Champions League, it can be a less attractive strategy.

“Therefore, we tend to see more spending in the January market from those in the lower part of the Premier League.

“So they need to be careful not to upset the applecart too much in this regard, in my view.”

Alexis Sanchez and Bruno Fernandes are United’s only two major acquisitions in the January window in recent years.

Rangnick’s side are in action at Leeds United tomorrow (20 January).
