Man United told to complete box-office signing of Martial replacement after Sky reveal – pundit
Alan Hutton has insisted Man United need to “go and spend money” on a striker.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender insisted United need a “top class number nine” to compete for the top spots in the league.
As reported by the Daily Mail (8 January), Erik ten Hag’s side are said to be eyeing a swoop for Inter Milan’s Edin Dzeko.
The 36-year-old is out of contract in the summer and the Serie A giants have not opened discussions over an extension.
As quoted by Sky Sports (7 January), Ten Hag admitted that current number nine Anthony Martial is struggling to manage the workload required of him.
The Dutchman added that Martial is not in a position to play 90 minutes every few days after an injury-interrupted season.
When asked if Dzeko is the kind of player United need, Hutton told Football Insider: “He definitely gives you something different.
“He is a proper number nine that wants to get the ball into him and link play. Of course he will still score goals but it is definitely a short-term fix.

“I think it is a position where Man United have to go and spend money. They have Martial and everyone is still saying he is a great player but he might get better. It is frustrating.
“So that would definitely be short term. They definitely need a top class number nine if they really want to go and compete for the top places in the league. But I am not surprised that they are looking at someone.“
