Man United told to sign ’20-goal-a-season’ striker as new offer readied – pundit

Man United must prioritise the signing of a new star striker if they are to return to the Champions League.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the lack of transfer activity at Old Trafford.

Man United are yet to make a senior signing this summer while rival clubs such as Liverpool and Tottenham have already signed multiple players.

Nemanja Matic has signed for Roma while Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Jessie Lingard and Edinson Cavani will all leave the club upon the expiry of their contracts later this month.

As per Manchester Evening News (23 June) the Red Devils are still locked in negotiations for Frenkie de Jong and are preparing a new offer.

However, McLeish claims a new striker should be top of the club’s shopping list.

“The recruitment has been criticised over the last 10 years or so,” McLeish told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“What Sir Alex Ferguson would do and what he was good at was picking great strikers.

“He always said you are only as good as your strikers. He would organise his defence, get a couple of ugly guys like me and Willie Miller then he would get guys who scored goals.

Man United fans are growing tired

“Mark Hughes, Van Nistelrooy, Dwight Yorke, there was a colossal amount of strikers who got goals for Man United.

“If you sign a striker who will get you 20 in a season then you are close to winning a Championship or close to being in the Champions League.”
