Man United transfer plan: O’Rourke shares January signings update

Man United have no plans to spend big in the January transfer window and the new manager will not be guaranteed funds to improve their squad.

Ruben Amorim was sacked by Man United following his press conference outburst in which he criticised the board amid suggestions he would not be backed financially.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, their replacement will also be asked to work with what they have for now, with no major plans in place to improve their squad despite some clear weaknesses.

The addition of a new midfielder and striker has been high on Amorim‘s list of demands given their lack of quality options in both positions as things stand.

Instead, they plan to be patient until Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui return from AFCON and save funds which will be spent in the summer.

Man United have no plans to spend big in January

Despite Amorim’s desires to bolster the squad before his dismissal, United have never planned to spend big this month, and that is unlikely to change.

Instead, there will be a focus on the summer window with a new permanent manager expected to arrive with big plans to shape the squad in their image.

However, Football Insider exclusively revealed on 8 January that Man United’s transfer plans could be restricted if they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, “I don’t think the managerial change will have a massive impact on what United doing in this transfer window.

“There’s no big plans at United to make too many signings in January, if any at all.

“I think they’re happy to get those players back from AFCON, which will boost the squad.

“Obviously then they want to keep their powder dry for the summer when there could be a new manager in charge at Old Trafford who will be looking to make their own signings.

“So yeah, don’t think Amorim’s departure will dramatically change United’s thinking on transfer plans for this month.”

Who will be the next Man United manager?

Following Amorim’s dismissal, United have opted to push forward with hiring an interim manager before assessing the position again in the summer.

Football Insider revealed on 9 January that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the front-runner for Man United, as he could reprise the role he left in 2021.

Michael Carrick remains a strong contender for the role, and it is currently seen as a two-horse race, but Solskjaer‘s experience has made him the preferred option.

Solskjaer previously took on the role as United’s interim boss following Jose Mourinho‘s departure in 2018, before securing the permanent role thanks to his side’s displays.

The former United striker oversaw 149 games in the full-time role, won 78, drew 33 and lost 38 of those, before ultimately losing his job in 2021.
