Man United urged to complete Frenkie de Jong signing after ‘private’ reveal – pundit
Alan Hutton has insisted Frenkie de Jong “ticks a lot of boxes” for Man United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said De Jong’s wage situation at Barcelona prevented his exit in the summer and now could be the time for him to join United.
The 25-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, but an issue regarding his deferred wages meant he was unwilling to leave the Camp Nou.
According to the Manchester Evening News (17 December), the Netherlands international privately gave Erik ten Hag assurances he was happy to join him in Manchester .
Ten Hag views De Jong as a world-class talent with the ability to slot nicely into his United team.
The midfielder’s contract at the La Liga giants runs until 2026.
When asked if De Jong would be the ideal signing for the Red Devils, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think he could be.
“He is a great football player.
“I think the hold up was with Barcelona owing him so much in wages and he probably did not want to leave at that moment in time.
“Whether that is going to be sorted out during the window, then he can possibly move.

“I think he is a player that can come in and play in a variety of positions in midfield and attack. I do think Man United are strong in those areas but Ten Hag will know him inside out and know what he’s capable of.
“So I think it ticks a lot of those boxes”
