Man City could block Nico Gonzalez joining Newcastle after another deal agreed
Man City may decide against letting Nico Gonzalez join Newcastle if Enzo Maresca feels he is lacking midfield depth, sources have told Football Insider.
Newcastle have identified Gonzalez as a top midfield target over the last week as they aim to bolster Matthias Jaissle's ranks.
The Magpies' hierarchy know they must back their new manager in the final knockings of the window after the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.
Gonzalez struggled for game time in his first season at the Etihad and could be available for transfer before the deadline passes.
Enzo Maresca is yet to decide whether he wants the Spaniard to leave, though, after I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast that he could block Newcastle's approaches.
The new Citizens boss has sanctioned the exits of Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders in recent weeks and so may look to keep Gonzalez around, as a result.
Newcastle's move for Nico Gonzalez could be blocked by Enzo Maresca
Gonzalez made 42 appearances in his first full season at City, but only started 17 Premier League matches under Pep Guardiola.
It currently seems unlikely for Newcastle to agree a deal for his services unless Maresca brings in another starting midfielder.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Newcastle are exploring a possible move for Nico Gonzalez to see if they can agree a deal to bring him to St. James' Park. Still a lot to do, I think, for Newcastle to try and get a deal done for Gonzalez.
"Obviously, we don't know if Manchester City are willing to let Gonzalez leave, having seen so many other midfielders leave the Etihad already this summer."
Man City planning to accelerate Enzo Fernandez move
City have already spent £115m to land Elliot Anderson, but do not seem to be done in terms of midfield signings this summer.
They have revived their interest in Chelsea star Fernandez this month, with Maresca pushing to reunite with his former player.
Sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Man City are planning to accelerate a move for Fernandez, despite Chelsea's self-imposed deadline to accept an offer for him having passed last week.
It remains to be seen if a move for the Argentine international can be completed, and thus, if it has an impact on Gonzalez leaving the club.
