Man United star Mason Mount responds as England Lionesses reach Euro semi-final

England progressed to the semi-finals of the Women’s European Championship via a dramatic victory over Sweden on Thursday.

After coming back from 2-0 down on 17 July, England beat Sweden in a nervy penalty shootout, even though Lauren James, Beth Mead, Alex Greenwood, and Grace Clinton all missed their spot-kicks.

Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses will now face Andrea Soncin’s Italy in a last-four clash in Geneva on Tuesday, 22 July.

Italy head into the semi-finals in better form than defending champions England, having beaten Norway 2-1 on Wednesday, 16 July.

The Lionesses failed to display the sort of dominance against Sweden that they showed in comprehensive group stage wins over both Wales and the Netherlands.

However, England rightly celebrated their dramatic penalty shootout triumph as they took a major step towards defending their crown.

The Lionesses’ official Instagram account posted on 17 July: “We never quit. England are in the WEuro2025 semi-finals.”

Manchester United midfielder and 36-cap Three Lions international Mason Mount showed his support for Wiegman’s women by commenting with a raised hands emoji.

Lionesses must perform better against Italy

England showed their fighting spirit by clawing back a 2-0 deficit, scoring two goals in as many second-half minutes via Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang.

Arsenal star Chloe Kelly proved highly influential to the Lionesses’ comeback, as she created an assist for Bronze just one minute after entering the pitch as a substitute.

However, Wiegman’s side were poor for vast swathes of their quarter-final, allowing Champions League winner Stina Blackstenius and Kosovare Asllani to run them ragged.

Meanwhile, semi-final opponents Italy showed their attacking prowess in their knockout victory over Norway, as Cristiana Girelli scored a brace.

If the Lionesses produce a similarly unconvincing performance against Soncin’s women, they are unlikely to progress to the final, where either World Cup winners Spain or hosts Switzerland await them.

Italy demonstrated their fearless tendencies when they took a 1-0 lead over Spain in the group stages, only conceding the last goal of their 3-1 defeat in the last minute.
