Man United could 'overspend' in January on one condition - Finance Guru

Manchester United could break their current financial model if there are serious signs of battling for the Premier League title.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that, while highly unlikely, the owners could be forced to back the manager in January.

Supporters were left extremely disappointed by the Red Devils' summer transfer window, only signing Carlos Baleba, Karl Darlow, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.

It has already been suggested that Man United's squad is too small and inexpensive to challenge in the Champions League, and the 2026-27 campaign has been mixed so far.

Michael Carrick's side thrashed Ipswich Town, but coming in between a defeat to Hull City and Everton, the Red Devils are sitting 11th in the table.

This is especially important because, unless United are hit by a key injury, battling for the league title is the only likely way that Carrick will force the owners to splash the cash.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson does not expect United to break their current spending model, but didn't rule it out completely.

"Do I think they'll spend more money in January? Opportunistically, perhaps, if something came up, like a key injury," he said.

"But with the general plan, they've been very disciplined. The one thing you can say is they've been very disciplined in terms of their approach.

"It's quite clear what the approach is. It's quite clear they won't, what they consider to be 'overspend'. It's quite clear that they set themselves some pretty tight budgets.

"And if a player is not within that budget or they've spent their budget, that's it. And I don't think they'll be swayed in January.

"Now, if they were five points clear at the top of the table, and thought, 'Maybe this is our chance to win the league unexpectedly,' then maybe.

"But first of all, I don't think that's going to happen. Secondly, they've shown themselves to be pursuing quite a determined austerity."
