Man United next manager: 'Surprise' update on Antonio Conte replacing Michael Carrick
Manchester United are highly unlikely to turn to Antonio Conte if they decide to pull the trigger on Michael Carrick's position.
The 57-year-old has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons after making a public declaration of his plans to return to management, with the Old Trafford job in his sights.
This comes amid growing pressure on Carrick as his side have taken just two wins from nine games across all competitions, with calls for the manager's head growing.
However, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Conte is unlikely to be a front-runner for the job if it does become available in the near future.
Instead, Man United are likely to assess candidates who have had more recent success in the Premier League, although that search is not believed to have begun yet.
Could Antonio Conte be the next Man United manager?
Football Insider revealed on 11 October that Conte is keen on a return to management and is eyeing the Man United job as a potential destination if the role becomes available.
The explosive manager has been out of work since he left Serie A outfit Napoli in the summer, but has already publicly confirmed his interest in returning to the dugout.
His impressive trophy-winning record is bound to see him land another top job, but as things stand, he is unlikely to be considered for the Man United job if Carrick is sacked.
"I don't doubt that Antonio Conte would be interested in the Man United job," Brown told Football Insider.
"But I don't think it's something the club will be considering at the moment, it's been a long time since he would've been considered as a leading candidate for Man United.
"It's been ten years since he won the league with Chelsea, and look at what happened when he took over at Tottenham, it was meltdown after outburst after complaint.
"Man United aren't going to want to move forward with a maneger who has already shown he isn't afraid of speaking out against owners. It would be a massive surprise.
"Either way, it's not a decision they're going to be making any time soon, because they're not looking to replace Michael Carrick, so there won't be anybody on their list.
"Obviously they'll be aware of different managers, but it's not something they're actively looking into, and if it was they would want someone with more recent success than Conte."
What is the latest on Michael Carrick's future?
Speculation about Conte potentially becoming the next Man United manager comes amid growing pressure on Carrick after what has been a slow start to the season.
Following a late 1-1 draw against ten-man Spurs last time out, this is now Man United's worst start to a Premier League season in their history, with just six points from six games.
However, Brown told Football Insider that Man United are backing Carrick to turn things around and believe he is the right man to get the best out of this team.
While the club's hierarchy accept that results must improve, there is still a belief that they have the right man in place despite some concerns starting to creep in.
The latest frustrating result at home against a struggling Tottenham side has raised new concerns, particularly amongst the fans, but the club's stance has not changed.
