Manuel Lanzini backed to complete West Ham exit after £51m deal agreed - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Manuel Lanzini will be happy to find a new club after being told he is surplus to requirements at West Ham.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 29-year-old has been surpassed in the pecking order after the arrival of “highly-rated” star Lucas Paqueta.

Football Insider revealed on 19 September that West Ham are planning to offload Lanzini after completing the club-record signing of Paqueta.

The Argentina international, who has made 210 Irons appearances to date, has been told he is free to find a new club ahead of the January transfer window.

Paqueta joined West Ham in a deal worth a reported £51million last month, while Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma are also vying to become the first-choice attacking midfield option.

Whelan insisted Lanzini will already be working with his agent to find a new destination in January.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think it makes sense when you’ve got Paqueta, someone who you’ve paid big money for and is highly-rated around Europe.

“Benrahma, as well, has put in performances which are deserving of a place on the teamsheet.

“Lanzini has been at the club a long time, and I think they’ve probably looked to replace him in the summer.

“So it doesn’t surprise me that he’ll be allowed to leave the club in January. I’m sure Lanzini is happy with that decision too, as he’ll want to finish his career playing regular football.

“I think it works best for both parties. It’s better to be honest with a player, and I’m sure he’ll respect that decision and work together with his agent to find somewhere new.”
