Marcus Rashford: Pundit issues ‘massive’ verdict on star’s future after Man United update

Marcus Rashford has a future at Man United despite his “really disappointing” recent form, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the “massively talented” 24-year-old must show “more desire”.

Rashford has failed to start in the Red Devils’ last four league games and has been supplanted by 19-year-old Anthony Elanga in the Man United pecking order.

Man United

According to the Guardian (7 March), the England international is “considering his future” due to his lack of minutes and is giving “serious consideration” to asking for a move away from Old Trafford.

Rashford is out of contract in June 2023, with Man United having the option to extend his deal until 2024.

Whelan suggested the forward is one of a number of Red Devils stars allowing their ego to “overpower their talent”.

“I think he’s still good enough to have a future at Man United,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“But you’re seeing these aspects in everyone’s game where their egos are just overpowering their talent.

“Certain players, to me, it looks like they think they don’t need to do that extra bit of running, they don’t think they need to work hard.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked because he couldn’t get these players working hard enough. Ralf Rangnick has come in, but nothing’s changed.

“If Rashford wants to be there, he’s got to show a bit more desire when he comes on. His performance against Man City was really disappointing, the same goes for Jesse Lingard. They are both massively talented but not showing it.”

Man United sit fifth in the Premier League, just one point adrift of Champions League qualification.

Rashford has netted just five goals in 24 appearances this term.
