Marcus Rashford to agree mega-money Saudi move? Stefan Borson reacts

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford is unlikely to accept a big-money offer from Saudi Arabian clubs in the January transfer window.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he doesn’t believe a move to the Middle Eastern country would be viable for the England international.

In an interview with journalist Henry Winter on 17 December, Rashford revealed he is “ready for a new challenge and the next steps”.

But the 27-year-old’s deal, which is believed to be worth in excess of £325,000 a week, isn’t set to expire until 2028.

Ruben Amorim left Rashford out of his squad for three Premier League games before he was an unused substitute in the 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United on 30 December.

The Independent reported on 2 January the forward has rejected three offers from Saudi Pro League clubs worth up to £35million a year.

But Borson insisted the numbers on offer are unlikely to be worth anywhere near the reported figures.

“I would take it all with a pinch of salt about the amounts that are involved,” Borson told Football Insider.

“I’m sure Saudi clubs would take him. Whether it’s at £35million a year, which is something like double his current wage and would be tax free if he stayed there long enough, I think it’s all very unlikely.

“I did see Andre Gray was on a podcast this week with Ben Foster and they were talking about Saudi wages, what you read in the press and how it all works.

“He was clear that all of the rumours that you get about what players are being offered by the Saudi clubs are greatly exaggerated.

“I suspect it’s nowhere near the numbers that are being mentioned, but it would be a great solution for United because who else is going to be able to afford his wage?

“But it’s not a surprise that Rashford won’t go to Saudi and couldn’t just go there short term because he would have to pay tax.

“I don’t think it was ever really viable.”
