Mark Bonner agrees deal to become Gillingham manager – sources
Gillingham have agreed a deal with Mark Bonner to become their new manager, sources have told Football Insider.
The League Two club are set to announce the appointment of the former Cambridge United boss soon.
A full agreement is now in place between the 38-year-old and the club after the two parties reached a breakthrough in their negotiations.
The Gills have been searching for a new manager after Stephen Clemence was sacked last week following a disappointing end to the season.
Gillingham move quickly to make Mark Bonner new manager
Gillingham have moved quickly to announce Clemence’s successor as they look to plan for next season.
The 46-year-old only joined the club back in November 2023 following the sacking of now-Millwall manager Neil Harris.
Clemence took over with the Gills sitting eighth in League Two, but he could never really get things going in the right direction and they eventually finished the campaign in 12th spot.
That was deemed far from good enough for ambitious owner Brad Galinson, who was hoping the club would mount a serious promotion challenge this year.
It wasn’t meant to be for Clemence, however, and now Bonner is the man charged with plotting a route back to League One at Priestfield Stadium.

Bonner will be looking to enjoy similar success to what he achieved in his first full season at Cambridge, where he guided the club to promotion from League Two in 2021.
He was sacked by the U’s in November 2023 with his side sitting 18th in the League One table – the same place they would eventually go on to finish the campaign.
Bonner will now be looking to quickly get to work and put the pieces in place to help Gillingham push for promotion next season.
