Warburton: This is why Rangers are struggling this season, fans won’t be happy

By Matt Farr

Rangers boss Mark Warburton claims that his side are struggling this season because of the ‘randomness of football’.

The Ibrox chief has been growing under increased pressure in recent weeks, with his side having won just once in the Scottish Premiership since the victory over Inverness on Boxing Day.

They trail Old Firm rivals Celtic by an incredible 27 points in the league, while their 1-1 draw with Ross County last week also saw them fall behind Aberdeen.

Their pursuit of the league title fell through a very long time ago, but the new expectation for Warburton’s side is to finish second, and in their current slump, they run the risk of ending the campaign on a very low note.

However, with his side also struggling in front of goal, Warburton insists that their poor form is just a matter of bad luck.

He told the club’s official website: “I think randomness is a big part of it.

“We learnt a lot from our previous owner at Brentford who was a mathematician and we learnt a lot from him in terms of how we look at games.

“But the randomness of the ball to the far post for Kenny [Miller] to header and then Jon Toral to follow up, it could go in. Garner at the far-post in the first-half, he is a stud away from scoring so there are so many random natures.”

Warburton’s response is not likely to sit well among many groups of Ibrox supporters, who have already called for a change of personnel at the club amid their recent slump.

The fans have grown frustrated at the lack of vision showed by the club in terms of future planning, while there have also been concerns regarding the club’s transfer business.

Despite having money available to spend in the transfer market both in the summer and last month, Warburton opted instead to focus his attention on loan deals

Celtic, meanwhile, have used their own spending to hand themselves a substantial advantage over Rangers in the league, and Warburton’s more-reserved approach is seeing them fall even further behind.

Rangers are next in action against Morton in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.
