Martinez given ‘wake-up call’ after confirmed Aston Villa news – pundit
Aston Villa have made “a great signing” in Robin Olsen, according to Kevin Campbell.
The former Everton and Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 32-year-old would give Emiliano Martinez “a wake-up call” after his “howler” against Manchester United.
On Tuesday (18 January), Villa confirmed the arrival of Olsen on loan for the remainder of the season from AS Roma.
Speaking to club media shortly after, the goalkeeper claimed he can push Martinez “to be better.”
The Sweden international impressed on loan at Everton in the 2020-21 campaign when providing cover and competition for Jordan Pickford.
Olsen is Villa’s third senior signing of the window following the additions of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Olsen’s arrival at Villa, Robinson said: “He’s going to be a good backup for Martinez.
“You want your goalkeepers to be pushing each other and Olsen will do that.
“Martinez had a howler against Man United. It was perhaps down to a lack of concentration and a lack of concentration can be caused by a lack of competition. Maybe that’s why they’ve got a good number two in.

“You also have to think about a scenario when Martinez gets injured. Villa would’ve been thinking, ‘Wow, what do we do?’ They needed somebody who could come in and cover for that team.
“Olsen is a great signing. He gave Pickford a big wake-up call when he joined Everton last season.”
In other news, Agbonlahor has claimed El Ghazi has played his last game for Aston Villa and his £8million teammate may follow.
