Ex-Premier League official: Referee told to retire as new Tottenham controversy emerges
Referee Graham Scott should retire following his performance in Aston Villa's 4-0 loss to Tottenham on Saturday (9 April), according to Keith Hackett.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed Scott cannot keep up with the pace of the top-flight.
The 53-year-old did not show Matty Cash a yellow card for a challenge on Matt Doherty that, according to football.london on Sunday (10 April), has ended his season.
Hackett also told Football Insider Tyrone Mings was guilty of a "red card offence" that went unpunished.
He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: "I think it's time for this referee to retire.
"When you look at Anthony Taylor, Paul Tierney, Martin Atkinson and Mike Dean, they've all had 20-plus Premier League appointments this season. Scott has had 10, half the number of appointments. That says that even the management don't trust him.
"I'm suggesting that six referees ought to be on the gravy train out of the system and he should be one of them.
"He's 53 and the argument is that's it a young man's game. You've got to be athletic, you've got to be mobile. The dynamic of the game has changed.
"Just look at some of the players in Man City's game with Liverpool, I think one even covered 15km. A referee averages 11.5km and 1,000m at a high-level sprint.
"I think his time is gone. I'm being harsh judging on this game but he's missed a couple of clear yellow cards. At times, he gets too detached from play."
Scott's only other Tottenham game this season was the 1-0 loss to Burnley (23 February) where he showed no cards.
Saturday's game was the first time he had been in charge of an Aston Villa Premier League game this term.
