Charlton Athletic are plotting a raid on Middlesbrough to sign Marcus Browne on loan this month, Football Insider can reveal.

The winger, 22, may be surplus to requirements at the Riverside Stadium after the club signed Manchester City attacking duo Patrick Roberts and Lukas Nmecha earlier this week on deals that run for the rest of the season.

A Boro source has told Football Insider that Charlton are in the hunt for Browne along with League One trio Oxford United, Doncaster Rovers and Coventry City.

Woodgate must decide whether to loan out Browne, who has struggled to make an impact since signing from West Ham last summer.

The source explained that a permanent transfer has been ruled out by the north-east club.

Browne got regular game time in the first three months of the campaign but he has featured just once since the first week in November.

The winger has recently been serving a suspension and has missed Boro's last four matches.

He has made six starts among 16 appearances in all competitions for Boro but has yet to score or register an assist.

Browne enjoyed a successful season on loan at Oxford United last term, scoring nine goals and creating five assists for the club in League One.
