Paul Robinson was "shocked" by reports linking Jan Vertonghen with a move to Manchester City and claimed it would be a "kick in the teeth" to Tottenham fans were it to happen.

The former White Hart Lane number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted he could not see the 33-year-old completing a move to the Etihad given his age.

The Telegraph report that the Belgium international has emerged as a surprise target for Pep Guardiola this summer as he looks to address City's defensive frailties.

Both signed short-term deals last month to ensure that they could play for Spurs until the completion of the 2019/20 season.

When asked by Football Insider if he could see Vertonghen at the Etihad next season, Robinson said:

"It would be a kick in the teeth but I could not see that happening.

"He is a top class defender and has been for man years but I cannot see Manchester City signing Vertonghen given the age he is at now. They would be signing him as a stop-gap and then they would have to look again next season.

"I would be shocked if that move happened."

The centre-half has made 30 appearances for the Lilywhites this season and scored twice.

If Vertonghen leaves this summer he would be ending an eight-year association with the North London club after he joined from Ajax in July 2012.
