Paul Robinson has claimed West Ham will only be able to sign the "incredible" Matheus Pereira this summer if they avoid relegation.

The former Spurs and Leeds United goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted the Hammers will not be the only ones targeting the 23-year-old.

Pereira is currently on season-long loan from Benfica. The Baggies are obliged to complete a permanent £8million deal for the attacker on the completion of 45 minutes of 30 games.

Robinson suggested the whereabouts of the two clubs next season will prove pivotal to any potential deals.

"He is a top player Pereira," he told Football Insider.

"He has been outstanding this season. His assists have been incredible and West Brom's dip in form coincided when he was out and I think he would be a top signing for anyone.

"However, West Ham could go down because they have a very difficult end to the season. If they go down and West Brom come up it is a deal that will not happen at all.

"I suspect there are other suitors out there and if West Brom do not go up there will be no shortage of takers for Pereira in the Premier League. It is also a good price for a player of that quality."

Pereira has scored six goals and provided 16 assists in his 34 Championship appearances for the Baggies this season.

The Irons currently sit two points above the relegation zone in the Premier League whilst Slaven Bilic's side currently occupies one of the two automatic promotion spots in the Championship.
