Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson would be an "excellent signing" for Rangers.

That is according to former Gers defender Alan Hutton who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, delivered his first-hand verdict on his old Aston Villa teammate joining Steven Gerrard's squad.

Hutton, who trained alongside Johnson during their time at Villa together, believes his former teammate would be a very welcome addition at Ibrox.

"I think that would be an excellent signing," Hutton told Football Insider.

"Obviously you know that I trained a lot with him when he was at Villa, it didn't quite work out there, but he's really went from strength to strength at Preston, he's been one of their key men and I think it's always about can you bring in players that are going to improve your squad.

"I definitely think he brings that; a wealth of experience, he can score goals, he's strong, he's quick, he's good at passing  - he brings everything that Gerrard would want within a midfielder.

"He is versatile, he can sit deep or play further forward, so I think that, for me, is somebody that he should definitely push forward and try and get a deal."

Rangers target

Johnson has been a first-team mainstay since joining Preston and has a total of 237 appearances, 47 goals and 29 assists under his belt for the Lilywhites.

He has continued his fine form this season, with four goals and three assists to his name so far.
