Frank McAvennie has labelled Alfredo Morelos an "utter embarrassment" after an update on his immediate Rangers future.

The Celtic icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to Steven Gerrard's update on his striker.

Speaking to Sky Sports on 23rd July, Gerrard admitted he is "not sure" when Morelos will return to Auchenhowie for the new season.

All the Rangers boss would concede is that the Colombian is "due back at some point".

Morelos, 25, spent the summer on international duty with Colombia and is currently resting in his home country.

McAvennie claims Gerrard will get fed up with waiting for his star man to return and could even sanction his exit.

"I don't know what's happening with Morelos," McAvennie told Football Insider's Ben Wild.

"He's a law unto himself that boy. He's not come back yet, has he?

"Stevie Gerrard doesn't know when he's coming back yet, does he?

"That is an utter embarrassment to Rangers. It's a terrible situation and terrible from a player.

"I think he may find Gerrard will just lose interest in him. I have no idea how that will play out.

"It must be affecting the whole club. Can they cash in on him just to get rid of him.

"If some of the prices I'm seeing in the papers are right, he'll be gone.

"You can't be doing that, it's an embarrassment to Rangers. He's not bigger than the club."

Morelos scored 17 goals and chipped in with 13 assists in all competitions last season.
