Paul Robinson has lauded Edinson Cavani after the Man United striker committed himself to the club until the end of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one claimed the 34-year-old has a major role both on and off the field between now and the summer.

Cavani started for the Red Devils on Monday night as they scraped past Aston Villa into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

As quoted by the Guardian prior to the game (10 January), interim manager Ralf Rangnick revealed the Uruguay international has pledge to stay beyond the January window.

Cavani had been heavily linked with a move to La Liga giants Barcelona.

He has six months left on his contract at Old Trafford.

When asked by Football Insider's Dylan Childs for his reaction to the news, Robinson said:

It’s great news because he’s clearly someone the manager wants around the dressing room. Cavani is a leader and you need players like that when there is unrest in the dressing room.

"Players with character like him will show the right attitude and application every day in training and Manchester United need that. The younger players need a role model like Cavani.

"He’s an incredible player on the pitch but I think he’s equally important off it.”

Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes are believed to have been arguing behind the scenes.
