Sources: Chelsea set for face-to-face Mateo Kovacic talks soon
Chelsea are set to hold talks with Mateo Kovacic over a new contract, sources have told Football Insider.
The 28-year-old midfielder's current deal at Stamford Bridge expires in 2024, and the Blues are concerned about losing him on a free transfer in a year's time.
Clubs around Europe have already begun circling for Kovacic given his contract situation, with Man City, Man United and Bayern Munich all monitoring the situation.
Football Insider sources revealed on Sunday (2 April) that former Blues boss Thomas Tuchel is pushing the Bayern Munich board to sign Kovacic his summer.
However, Graham Potter is keen to keep Kovacic in London and has urged Chelsea to extend his stay at the club. The player's representatives are set to hold talks with the board over potential terms for a new deal.
The problem facing Chelsea is that they need to sell players and raise funds if they are to continue investing under Todd Boehly and abide by financial fair play rules.
Mason Mount and Kovacic could both leave the club this summer, with this site's sources revealing that Chelsea are hoping to raise £100million for both players.
Chelsea recorded losses of £121million over the last financial year and will see their spending capped if they aren't able to balance the books.
Kovacic is currently into his fifth year at Chelsea after initially joining the club on loan in 2018 and then permanently joining for £40million a year later.
He has made 212 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring six and assisting 14 times.
