Sunderland are in talks to sign Bristol City defender Bailey Wright, Football Insider understands.

The north-east giants have climbed into pole position to sign the 27-year-old in this month's transfer window.

A Sunderland source has told Football Insider that the club are negotiating the terms of a deal with Bristol City and are hopeful an agreement can be reached.

Sunderland are one of a number of clubs who have been chasing the centre-back, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

It is likely Wright would sign on an initial loan deal, with the League One big hitters then looking at a permanent move in the summer.

Sunderland's potential deal comes after Football Insider revealed that week that Luton Town had made a move to sign Wright from City.

Phil Parkinson's side can offer Wright the chance to play a leading role in a side challenging for promotion to the Championship.

The Black Cats are seventh in League One, a point adrift of Burton Albion in the final play-off spot.

Wright has only played three times for Bristol City in the Championship this season with Tomas Kalas, Nathan Baker, Ashley Williams and Taylor Moore all ahead of him in Lee Johnson's plans.

The defender, who has 24 caps for Australia, began his career at Preston North End before moving to Ashton Gate in January 2017.
